When it comes to the Savoy, you just HAVE to kick things off by saying ‘if the walls could talk…’, simply because these walls HAVE truly seen some of the most iconic faces of both past - think Charlie Chaplin, Fred Astaire, Marilyn Monroe - and present (not surprising, seeing that they are the official hotel for the BAFTAs). In layman terms, there is no shortage of British heritage a la Downtown Abbey days. You can even ask for butler service if you can afford it.
Situated on the Strand, where the storied buildings have seen so much scars and wounds of the WWII, there is really no shortage of theatrical entrances, and the Savoy does have the best of the best at its gilded doorsteps - the Covent Garden theatres and restaurants in front, Charing Cross Station and the British Museum few doors down; and in back, the Thames and Westminster Abbey just a few minutes away. It is a real British experience to be here - elegance and a true immersion into the five-star service of yore completes the regal atmosphere that this hotel has upheld so well for decades.
It may come across a tad fusty, and it certainly is not my top favourite, only because the rooms have an historical air to it, and I have a feeling it is intentional (there are two types of designs to the suites and rooms in The Savoy - Edwardian, or Art Deco. I think I fall in the first category). I didn’t get a view of the Thames, but I definitely got the bustle of the Strand at my windowsill. The bathroom was a sight to behold, although I did not fancy the toiletries too much (again, the scent is too fusty, but that of course, is very much about each individual’s taste).
HAVE A CUP OF TEA
I also had the most pleasurable experience of dining in the confines of my room, and I have to pay special compliments to the chef for meeting my vegan needs. I also should point out that afternoon tea at the Savoy is taken very seriously - so seriously that the uppety-ups actually make reservations way in advance for one of their great Afternoon Tea sets.
