We are experiencing a Tokyo hangover, we really are. We miss the great city lights, the speckless streets, the impeccably well-mannered people, and above all, the majestic sights and quirky turns that the city always takes whenever we thought we have seen it all.

And speaking of majestic, if that is your cup of tea, search no further than Palace Hotel while holidaying in Tokyo. Because if the fact that it is right smack across the Imperial Palace Gardens is not enough, you will probably relish in the other fact that the hotel itself is majesty and grace embodied.

But first, the view:

Yep, the hotel has won consecutive years of awards for abiding by its philosophy, the omotenashi of the Japanese (what we have mentioned above as the impeccable manners of the locals. Oh yes, all magnified more so right here in this very hotel). Just look at this in-room service, which was a special request to make something totally vegan.

And because the experience would not be complete without a look outside of those glass windows... let's take a stroll in the Gardens, shall we?

I was also very taken by the modern art that adorned the quiet, elegant walls of this hotel. Japanese decor abounds here in the motifs of leaves and earthy colours, and of course, zen lines for architecture; there is an Evian Spa if you would like to zen further, and all in all, the Japanese aesthetic is fully fledged in the corridors, where the muffled silence is reverent and not sullen, majestic and yet never fusty.

It is definitely worth mentioning, the city centre, the financial district, the Midtown of Tokyo that we know here as Marunouchi. You see history's hand in every turn, though now cloaked in gleaming veneer of modernity. The bridge, the gardens, the castle... you sense Japan's victory right here in the straight-line roads and towering buildings. A district that definitely plays its role as the antithesis to Shibuya and Harajuku.
